Tips about Layovers when Flying with Kids

As tempting as it may be to trim your layover to a minimum and get to your destination 30 minutes earlier, be careful about trimming too much.

Allow yourself plenty of time during layovers when traveling with infants or toddlers.  You may need some extra time to deal with unexpected events such as:

  • Diaper changes

  • Bathroom stops

  • Hungry kids

  • Behavior problems

  • Or even…heaven forbid…a child wandering too far and getting separated from you.

If you have already emptied your “bag of tricks” on the previous flight(s), you may also want time to purchase some additional items to help entertain your children during the next flight.

All of these issues are of course in addition to the normal trials that passengers of air travel must overcome during layovers and plane changes.  While it may be tempting to trim some time and make the trip shorter, consider allowing that little bit of extra time to make your trip easier.
