Ear Pain when Flying with Kids
Sometimes this is just due to a baby being frightened or even just misbehaving. However, sometimes the screams are due to ear discomfort. Small children do not understand what is happening as altitude changes and the may need a little help as cabin pressure changes. For babies, nursing mothers can help their children by nursing during takeoff and landing. A bottle works well also. The activity of nursing, drinking or swallowing will assist children with clearing their ears. Drinking a glass of water or eating a snack can help toddlers. Try to avoid the use of chewing gum with toddlers though. Chewing gum will inevitably end up somewhere unexpected later during your flight. Failure to properly clear ears could lead to a more serious condition. Consult your pediatrician before your trip if your child is suffering from a cold or has nasal congestion. Your doctor may prescribe a decongestant to help minimize the impact of changing cabin pressure on tiny ears of a congested baby flying. Be sure to obtain prescriptive and dosage advice from your pediatrician before administering any medications or sedatives to your child.
