Tips about Bassinets when Flying with Infants

Airlines commonly use larger planes, such as the Boeing 747-400, for long international flights.  These larger planes have additional facilities for infants.

On the Boeing 747-400, bulkhead seats located in the center section have bassinets that allow infants or very small children a place to sleep.  These are sometimes called “sky cots”.

These bassinets are a wonderful relief for parents traveling with a lap child during a long international flight.  There are two bassinets available at each bulkhead.  The bassinets collapse and are stored on the wall in front of the passenger seats.  Bassinets must be stowed and secured during takeoff and landing.

Another benefit of obtaining seating with bassinet access is that the passengers sitting next to you are likely to also be traveling with a small child.  That makes your trip a little less stressful because you will not have to worry about whether the passengers next to you like kids or tend to become agitated by normal child behavior.  You will immediately have something in common with the passengers next to you, which allows for easy conversation.  You may also find that your children interact which provides a distraction from the boredom that many children must deal with on flights.  A wonderful benefit is that you can share toys and books with the other family, potentially doubling your access to activities for your child.

If you wish to obtain seating with access to a bassinet, contact your airline to determine availability on your flight.  Availability generally depends on the model of plane used for your flight.

Travel distance, passenger load and other factors influence the model of plane used on any particular flight.  Thus, bassinets are more likely to be an option on long international flights.  If your flight has bassinets available then book your trip early, specify your bassinet preference and get your seating assignment as soon as possible.  If you are unable to get a bassinet on your preferred flight, shop around for other flight times to determine if slight modifications to your plans would allow you to take a flight with an available bassinet.  If you are facing the prospect of a long flight with an infant, then you might find that having a bassinet is worth its weight in gold.

 Flying Kids Mission

As parents, we are responsible for molding our precious babies into well rounded adults who have an appreciation for the variety of opportunities that they have available to them as they grow and develop as individuals.  Exposing children to varying geographical locations and cultures around the world is an important teaching method that many parents have the option to use for developing generations of culturally aware future leaders who have childhood experiences that help them understand and personally relate to global issues.  It is the mission of Flying Rugrats to arm parents with information about flying with children, toddlers or infants strategies in an effort to dispel fear or apprehension about family travel so that families may travel freely and better educate our future world citizens through positive travel experiences.
