Car Seat Installation when Flying with Kids

Many parents find it difficult to install a child safety seat on a plane.  Unless you are in business or first class, there is not much room to maneuver.

You have to contend with armrests.  The shape of the seat backs is different from car seats.  Most importantly, the mechanics of the seat belt clasp used on airplanes is very different from seat belts used in automobiles.

If you thread the seat belt through the car seat and attempt to fasten it with the release lever facing up (the normal position if you were using it as a seat belt for a person) then you might have trouble.  Due to the release lever design for airplane seatbelts, attaching in such a way can result in the release lever getting wedged against the car seat after you tighten the seat belt. This can make it near impossible to get the seat belt to release and result in difficulty removing the car seat when you arrive at your destination.

If your car seat is constructed in such a way that you run into the above difficulty, there is a trick that you can use when installing the seat that may resolve the problem.  Steps for installation:

  1. Loosen the seat belt completely.

  2. Thread the seatbelt through the car seat according to seat manufacturer guidelines.

  3. When threading the seat belt turn the clasp so that the release lever is opposite of the car seat structure.  As if you were clasping it upside down.

  4. Tighten the seat belt until the car seat is secure.

This method results in the release lever of the seat belt facing away from the car seat in the direction of the airplane seat back.  Because of the shapes of most car safety seats and airplane seat backs, there should be enough room to reach in and pull the seat belt release lever without difficulty.
